Speed Drawing (sometimes called quick sketching), is the art of capturing the gesture of a subject very quickly with lines. To be successful the artist should have confidence in his/her drawing skills.

Most artists that practice this form of art use various tactics to push themselves to draw quickly. Not all videos dubbed as speed drawing are truly done quickly, many are done at a moderate speed and the video is speeded up to give the impression that the artist worked very quickly.

Quick sketch is a developed skill that many artists never master – of course, many artists prefer to focus on details and quality rather than a timeframe. Speed drawing is in a class of its own.

Some speed artists begin developing their skill slowly – with a focus on a single object rather than a complete image. This could be as simple as a head only. It has been suggested that drawing real people at gyms, amusement parks, or shopping malls is a good idea. This strategy forces one to draw quickly and learn to get the main lines down on paper as a starting point and then build on that.

The artist will undoubtedly want to capture the form of his/her object first and then add details. Because the ‘models’ will be moving the artist is also forced to depict the elusive element of motion.
