Step One: Find a model or an object of reference, this could even be a photo if you choose. Surprisingly, many artists work from photos. Be sure to find one that is very detailed, if you begin with a blurry image it will be reflected in your drawing. Another tip is to find a reference that holds your interest. You don’t want to get bored during the drawing process as that will lead to inferior work.
Step Two: Begin by drawing the outline of the head, this should be done in a dark pencil. Consider using a grid if measurements are an issue for you. The grid will be a guide for you as you draw.
Step Three: Begin your work on the eyes, the pupils will of course be very dark. Depending on the color of the retina you will determine the darkness of the pencil and/or shading to use. Brown eyes would naturally be darker than blue or green eyes.
Step Four: You are now ready to darken all areas that are naturally dark or shadowed. This will include any creases or wrinkles. You will also need to draw in any freckles or moles ... remember ... drawing is the simple process of putting lines on paper.
Step Five: To finish your drawing go in to add the lighter areas. You will want to use a light drawing pencil, there may be some areas that you decide will be more realistic looking without the addition of any color ... that is fine ... use this step to add or subtract from your drawing.
You will find that with practice you will easily master the technique of drawing a realistic looking face. The key is in getting the measurements correct, practice taking note of the typical facial features and how they relate to one another geographically. Your drawings will quickly improve!
