TEN QUICK DRAWING TIPS

This article will provide ten quick tips that will help you perfect your drawing skill ... whether you’re a beginner or an experienced artist you are sure to find something on this list that will help you. (VIDEO AT END OF ARTICLE)

  • Don’t trace photographs ... although this may seem like an easy way to create art you will not be learning anything from the experience. The end product may be a nice looking drawing but in the end you really did not learn how or why you drew the lines in the perspective areas.

  • Avoid the use of grids ... although grids are a great way to learn the use of proper measurements you definitely need to develop a skill for determining measurements. You will steal from yourself ... you will not be able to draw without the crutch of the grid unless you practice. Remember that art should be enjoyed ... that includes its creation. Don’t add burdens that are unnecessary.

  • Use fun or interesting subjects ... you don’t want to get bored as you work so start with something you like. If it happens to be a particular animal then draw that animal. You are much more likely to excel at drawing something you enjoy.

  • Consider drawing people that you see on TV or in movies. This will force you to pay attention to detail. Besides learning developing a keen sense of measurement you will need to train yourself to make mental notes related to details of anything that you want to draw. This practice will enhance both of those skills.

  • As you are drawing frequently hold your work up to a mirror. The mirrored effect will show lop-sided details that you might otherwise miss.

  • Another technique for finding flaws is to look at your drawing upside down. Lope-sided flaws will be seen more easily as well as anything that is crooked. You can even try drawing difficult areas with the paper upside down ... try it ... you might find that this technique simplifies what you had always found demanding.

  • When you are finished with a drawing wait a few days and look at it again. You may find that in fact you need to make some adjustments. After doing this a couple of times (with each portrait) you can then declare its completion and feel confident that it is in fact done.

  • Never take yourself too seriously. Some of your work will be outstanding while other drawings will simply not be that wonderful. This is to be expected ... you should always be learning new and better ways to improve on your drawings.

  • Keep a sketch book handy at all times ... you never know when you will find the ideal subject to draw.

  • Practice, Practice, Practice!!!

Drawing can and should be a stress reducer. It`s meant to bring joy to the artist as well as all that appreciate art ... make drawing fun.
