YOUR OWN DRAWING STUDIO

Whether a master or a beginner at drawing, every artist should have a space to work in. If you are either an aspiring artist or a skilled and experienced master craftsman you should have a space to use freely for your drawing passion.

A studio space is easy to set up. To begin consider the fact that for convenience sake you should be near your computer and a phone. Another item that you will find inspiring is that of a window.

You will also want the space to be peaceful and free of distractions. When drawing you should be in ‘your own space’ and not be disturbed.

Many artists find that a corner in a large room is the perfect drawing studio space. If you are fortunate enough to have a free one in your home then you automatically have the ideal drawing studio. Wherever you choose to make your studio remember to customize it. Your drawing studio should be a reflection you and your personality.

Play around with the lighting, you will of course need adequate lighting when you draw. Natural light is great but on overcast days and evening hours you will need to utilize artificial lighting. Avoid florescent light because it can result in eye fatigue and even headaches. Halogen lighting is an excellent choice because it mimics natural daylight and shows things in their true colors without any eye strain. Don’t forget that you will want a flex neck lamp. This will allow you to throw light directly onto your drawing.

A desk or table-top will work as a drawing surface. Some artists even rely on the use of laptop desks for drawing. The best drawing surface will have a slope upward. If you cannot find or afford a true drawing desk with this feature you can easily elevate the back legs of the desk with the use of some books.

You will want to have comfortable seating. It is suggested that you find a chair the ‘fits’ you and one that is adjustable. You are likely to spend hours drawing and that can take a toil on your back and neck if you are not comfortable.

Don’t forget that you will need some storage available in your drawing studio. A small table, a shelving unit or a storage cart will work beautifully to house your drawing supplies. You will also need a filing cabinet to organize your references.

A display board is a great place to display favorite drawings of your own as well as drawings from favorite artists. You can also display inspirational quotes, articles and images on this bulletin board. Use your imagination and be creative – this is YOUR drawing space. Make it inspiring!

Although not absolutely necessary, it is nice to have easels to display your work in progress as well as completed drawings.
